First Principle: Respect for Autonomy

Let's look at the first principle: Respect for Autonomy.

Respect for Autonomy is the obligation to allow or enable patients to self-govern their own lives, and to make their own decisions about their medical care based on the directives of their life plans.

Respecting patient's autonomy is usually understood as allowing healthcare providers to discuss and, if necessary, educate the patient about the different options available, however, it does not allow the healthcare provider to make the decision for the patient.
