Definition of Consent
Consent is an act of reason and deliberation. A person who possesses and exercises sufficient mental capacity to make an intelligent decision demonstrates consent by performing an act recommended by another. It should be voluntary and confirms willingness to receive care or participate in research after having been informed of all aspects of care or research that are relevant to the individual. This would include the purpose, benefits, risks and any available alternatives. Consent refers to the provision of approval or assent, particularly and especially after thoughtful consideration, which should be well documented.
